Natural accretion
of land in the Bay of Bengal is a
process that will continue. Demand for
land to settle land less households and
for other purposes is only expected to
increase in the years to come. As part
of CDSP-III feasibility studies will be
carried out for areas where char
development programmes can be undertaken
in future. In total three such studies
will be undertaken. Apart from a large
area comprising Char Nangulia, Noler
Char and Caring Char, east of Boyer Char
across the Hatiya river, other
prospective areas include Urir Char and
Sandwip island, newly accreted areas
northwest and southeast of Hatiya and
the region south of Bhola.
Under a separate
project the BWDB will experiment in a
number of places with the construction
of cross dams. Such dams are expected to
accelerate the rate of accretion. This
would create even more possibilities for
char development than already is the
case at present.
CDSP-III is going to do a study on the
two possible locations of the cross-dams
for Sandwip-Urir Char-Noakhali areas. An
EoI had been asked through the
advertisement in the Daily News Paper.
Among the thirteen participating firms,
three qualified consulting Firms have
been selected sending them Request for
Proposal (RFP) to take participate in
the tender with Technical and Financial
budget. After reviewing RFP, a
consulting firm and/or it’s associates
firms had been selected for the Sandwip-Urir Char-Noakhali Cross-dam
survey and modelling study. IWM has been
selected from the national and regional
consulting Firms. Study is about to
finalise submitting Draft Final Report
in June 2009.
